![]() The simple fact is overseas magnet makers do not have the records or generational knowledge to match the capabilities of USA magnet makers. USA magnet makers are also equipped to analyze vintage magnets and reconstruct the exact chemistry of the vintage magnet and then adjust the heat treating process to duplicate the BH curve and parameters of the original vintage magnet. Fortunately some of these records and processes are still known by the remaining USA Alnico manufactures. Once the magnets are made the changes in metal chemistry and heat treating are recorded in a melt record which spells out all properties of the magnet for the customer. Ordering Alnico magnets required drawings with specifications spelled out from dimensions to Alnico grade, BH curve etc. Alnico magnets were not an off the shelf item for Gibson. Although Alnico has been standardized into different grades, Alnico of all grades is routinely manipulated with changes to formulation and heat treating to tailor magnets to customers applications. pickup magnets is the metal formulation and heat treating processes of the USA Alnico manufactures that made P.A.F. The second important detail concerning the tone of vintage P.A.F. short A2 magnet and our Alnico 5 is made from a vintage formulation still on file in the USA. ThroBak custom casts short Alnico copied from a P.A.F. electric guitar pickup era through the start of the T-Top pickup era. However lab testing and vintage order records prove that both short Alnico 2 and short Alnico 5 were used for humbuckers by Gibson from the latter end of the P.A.F. Conventional wisdom also hold that short magnets are universally Alnico 5. The conventional wisdom is short Alnico magnets appear in 1960 however there is evidence of short magnets being used as early as 1958. Magnet length also changes through the P.A.F. However A2 magnets can be found in vintage bridge positions PAF's and they sound wonderful. Apparently this was done to balance the neck and bridge pickups by putting the weaker A2 magnet in the neck pickup. humbucker pickups and P-90 single coil pickups in conjunction with Alnico 4 or Alnico 5 in the bridge. One interesting detail is A2 is very often used in the neck pickup of both P.A.F. pickup but is less common in P-90 pickups. is Alnico 3 which is used in some early 50's P-90's. This is only logical since the magnet size is the same for both P.A.F.'s and P-90's. Alnico 2 and Alnico 4 were commonly used in 50's era P-90's and it is also common to see these same magnet grades in use in P.A.F. era Alnico grade somewhat mirrors the choice of Alnico grade for P-90 pickups.
